Pay Day Ramblings #002

Staying Cool During the Summer Months

26 June 2026

As I write this month’s Pay Day Ramblings, much of the UK is enjoying another spell of warm weather. For most people, that means barbecues, cold drinks and hopefully a bit of sunshine. For those responsible for looking after buildings, however, it often means something very different.

It is around this time of year that estates teams start receiving the familiar calls. “It’s too hot in here.” “Can we have some air conditioning?” “The meeting room is unbearable.”

On the face of it, the answer seems obvious. Install air conditioning. But, like most things in engineering, the reality is rarely that simple.

Before reaching for a specification or asking for quotations, it is worth taking a step back and understanding why the building is overheating in the first place.

Every overheating complaint does not automatically require a new air conditioning system. Sometimes the right answer is a technical solution. Sometimes it is buying a dozen ice lollies, opening a few windows and letting everyone finish half an hour early. The trick is knowing the difference.

Where air conditioning is required, it should be viewed as part of a wider building strategy rather than a standalone project. Cooling loads, electrical capacity, future maintenance, condensate drainage, refrigerant selection, energy consumption and occupant expectations all deserve careful consideration.

Final Thought

Good engineering is not about installing more equipment. It is about understanding the problem well enough to know whether new equipment is actually needed.
